To access criminal records in Texas, one would need to visit the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) as well as the Texas Department of Public Safety. Records access is limited to those who are authorized by the law such as police departments and authorized agencies. One can however access the criminal records that were categorized as public records. To obtain records, one has to create an account at the Computerized Criminal History repository of the State and purchase credits. Each credit costs about $3 and researchers can pay using a credit card or by sending a check through the mail.

By custom, one can access the records through three different ways – by calling the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, sending an email or doing it online. For those who want to do it through phone or email, they have to provide the Department with the person’s name, the county where they were convicted or the SID/TDCJ number. For those who want to access the records online, they have to create an account and purchase credits before they would be able to do the research.

For those who want a hassle-free research or would only want to do a one-time research, they might want to avail of third party search providers online to look for the criminal records they need. Availing of third party search sites is not only stress-free; they also provide one convenience as one would no longer need to setup an account in order to purchase a criminal record or wait for the call to be picked up or their email answered.
